ABOUT ALKI RECORDING

At Alki Recording you can record a high quality demo or full length CD for a considerably lower cost than anywhere else in Seattle, while maintaining the same quality level that would cost hundreds more at other recording studios. The concept at Alki Recording is simple: a modest amount of the right equipment used appropriately. Your performance is recorded using the same type of microphones, preamps and digital audio recording format found in studios all over the world - the same studios that create compact discs that are sold in record stores every day.
Types of Music & Content: I encourage musicians that have a sound of their own who are looking for a '70's-ish production aesthetic. I do not/will not use drum replacement samples for an acoustic kit or electronic vocal pitch correction software. I enjoy working with artists that lean socially progressive in folk, jazz, indie rock and psych genres. The studio will not tolerate music that furthers negative cultural or organized religious agendas.
Alki Recording provides thirty-two tracks of digital audio recording using ProTools, a computer based graphic audio recorder/editor. Up to 16 tracks can be recorded at any single time.
The Studio Space
The studio consists of five unfinished basement rooms in a home. This is the chief reason for low rates; the rooms are short of being entirely sound proof and have a utilitarian look. However outside noise is rarely an issue and the studio, while far from aesthetically pleasing, has excellent separation allowing bands to record live with minimal mic bleed.
8x8 Drum Room: this room was created to be nearly dead. A mix of cement, gypsum, carpeted floor and walls with sound dispersing materials. Excellent natural dry retro tone and also capable of large drum sounds by room micing the far end of the basement which is live.
8x9 Vocal & Acoustic Instrument Room: this room is entirely dead - it's essentially a large vocal booth. A mix of cement, gypsum, wood with carpeted floor, draped walls and a mix of sound dampening/dispersing materials.
10x20 Live Room: basically all cement with wood ceiling and a washing machine/dryer thrown in to make you feel right at home. Good for getting a live room sound on acoustic guitar, amps, handclaps or room mics for drums.
Amp rooms: one room and one dead closet allow amps to turn up without bleeding into other mics.
9x10 Mixing Room: this room is a mix of cement and wood with carpeted floor.
